Research Studies
APREI conducts numerous research studies to enhance and support the medical sciences. As an orthopaedics and sports medicine facility, our primary research focus includes:
- Biomechanics, kinematic studies, functional evaluation of patients and research on injury prevention and mechanisms
- Clinical outcomes, analysis of patient data including examination, diagnosis, treatment plan in various IRB approved studies
- Cadaveric and animal labs conducted to gain better understanding of joint structure, function and orthopaedic replacement devices from industry
Research efforts are funded by APREI operating funds, industry and individual grants.
Current Research Projects:
- 8 month research project at APREI in collaboration with Athletes’ Performance and City of Pensacola Firefighters. Researchers from University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada from the recognized Kinesiology program. Researchers assess the injury potential of incumbent firefighters while they perform simulated work tasks in the biomechanics laboratory. Upon completion of a 12-week movement training program designed and administered by coaches, examinations determine of the performance movement training program can reduce the injury potential of firefighters. “Ultimate goal is to develop effective and practical musculoskeletal injury prevention strategies for firefighters and subsequently introduce such strategies to other “occupational athletes” (e.g., members of the Armed Forces.
